Blog Archive How to Handle the Round 2 MBA Application Rush and Stay Focused

Blog Archive How to Handle the Round 2 MBA Application Rush and Stay Focused The month of November tends to signal the beginning of the rush toward second-round business school application deadlines. Many candidates who are just beginning to contemplate their MBA applications will call us and ask, “How many schools can I apply to at this stage?” or “Am I too late to start my applications for Round 2 now?” Unfortunately, no clear-cut answers to these questions exist. First and foremost, your focus should be on quality over speed. As a candidate, you are far better off completing applications to three schools with 100% effort than applying to five schools and putting forth just 60% effort. MBA admissions offices notice sloppy mistakes and will conclude that you did not pay full attention to your application and therefore may not really care about their program. One thing some candidates may not realize is that they do not need to commit to a specific number of schools up front. We typically suggest that candidates master one application and then apply what they have learned to the next. Submitting applications to five schools simultaneously can generally be problematic, but if you make significant progress on one school’s application and then begin work on the next, you can be confident that you will complete each one with a degree of excellence. The ideal number of target schools varies from candidate to candidate and depends on each individual’s professional and personal schedule, written communication skills, risk profile, ambitions, and other similar factors. So approach your applications methodically, recognize what is realistic, and then work aggressivelyâ€"but not haphazardlyâ€"toward your end goals. As you prepare your application(s), try to keep a clear head and a focused mind. Every once in a while, a concerned business school candidate calls us and says something along the lines of,  â€œStar491 wrote that Wharton won’t read past the 500-word limit, but IndianaHoops09 wrote that 10% over the limit is fine. Meanwhile, WannabeTuckie says…”  Reading this may amuse some of you, but the truth is that many MBA applicants have difficulty not visiting the various message boards, and some have even more difficulty not believing everything they read there. At the risk of stating the obvious, most message boards are completely unregulated, and you should be skeptical when reading the opinions expressed by anonymous posters. For every individual who claims to  know  something authoritatively, you can always find another individual who claims to  know  that the opposite is true. Round and round we go… Thus, our message is to ignore anonymous message board posts. Although this is valuable advice now, as you complete your applications (ideally with your sanity intact), it will become even more valuable as the admissions season progresses and many posters begin to make unsubstantiated claims about admissions statistics (offers given, GMAT scores of accepted candidates, etc.). If you tune out such noise now and put your energy instead into creating your best possible application(s), you will be far better off. Of course, if you do have any questions, you can always ask  us  on the message boards over at  Manhattan Prep,  Beat the GMAT,  or  GMAT Club. Or sign up for a  free  one-on-one consultation! Should Marijuana Be Legalized - 1594 Words

In today’s society we are currently debating whether marijuana should become legalized. There are currently 19 states who allow marijuana for medicinal use and 4 states who allow marijuana for recreational use. Abraham Lincoln once said â€Å"Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are crimes.† The United States spends billions of dollars a year on the â€Å"War against drugs,† it’s time we stop wasting tax payer’s money. How about instead of spending billions, the nation earns billions. If marijuana was legalized it would generate an enormous tax revenue, reduce crime, and give cancer and Aids patients another natural form of medicine. The†¦show more content†¦Those who still wanted to consume alcohol found ways to do so. â€Å"The Prohibition era encouraged the rise of criminal activity associated with bootlegging† (AE S taff 2009). Al Capone earned $60 million annually from his bootlegging operations (AE Staff 2009). Prohibition increases violence and criminal activity. If you think about it alcohol prohibition caused gangsters to fight dirty just to make a dollar. So many people wanted alcohol that it took the â€Å"bad guys† to get the people what they wanted. Al Capone took advantage of supply and demand. He saw that people demanded alcohol so he illegally supplied it making him millions. The same thing is happening with marijuana, people are demanding it and the â€Å"bad guy† is suppling it. We could take down a lot of criminal activity by taking away the millions-billions that drug lords are making. Let’s take these millions-billions and pump it back into the economy, create more jobs and better our education system. When one compares marijuana to alcohol, one quickly realize the number of lives lost from alcohol related deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimat ed 3.3 million deaths were caused by alcohol consumption. Marijuana is 114 times less deadly than alcohol. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), alcohol is the most commonly addictive substance in the United States. The NIAAA states that there are

DigitalTransformation Humanity & the Future †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the DigitalTransformation Humanity the Future. Answer: Introduction In this technological era, technology is a playing major role in organizations and all work is managed through technology whether it be personal or professional . This involvment in technology has brought some hindrances and challenges both for employers and managers. In this report, it will be discussed that how more and more apps are being used by the employees to manage their personal and work life better. The apps are being used for various purposes and it helps in providing working with different styles, both from employees and human resource department. The employees are very careful about spending their time judiciously, so any person who is tech savvy and takes care of his security and privacy issues on the internet can opt for these apps. There are many apps available in the market, ranging from time management, calendaring, file sharing, providing peaceful meditation apps that manage both their work and personal life. The role of leaders is to make sure that core assets are reviewed thoroughly to market the product. Work can be done at any time and anywhere with the help of these personal gadgets and devices. The Internet has made everything global and people are being connected through partnerships and redefining careers which makes people to learn more with best practices. The management has to make sure that instead of orthodox hierarchies, network structures should be used to make things more cooperative and combined. The report discusses the considerations on the part of employees , managers and leaders because of unlimited dependence on technology in the future. Apps used to manage Employees personal life and professional life Employees are using more apps to manage their personal and professional life. For some time, people have been using time management apps to manage their personal life, even for managing their small tasks like waking and sleeping hours. With usage of these apps people can manage their time spent on social network sites and concentrate more on their physical activities , an example of such a app is Toggle. These apps help to identify the task and record the time consumed in these apps. Developers of these apps are working to create official version of these apps. Time is precious for everyone and it is gaining importance these days. Employees feel that in tech job, time is an important tool and it should be managed wisely. In fact, time, is a more limited resource than money and should be managed effectively. Employees using these apps promote it to their counterparts when problems of productivity and prioritizing arises in the organization. Care to be while using the variety of aps that are available In few companies, the teams work together and work on their favorite apps to complete their work effectively. Although it is essential to be technologically strong, an efficient app will help to segregate important business data from piracy data and it will aid the users to work u flexibily and efficiently and avoiding unwanted data. Employees need to be very careful while using these apps as piracy data can spoil their important data. These apps may be useful for one employee and may or may not be useful for other employee, due to changes in working lifestyle and culture of the organization. Time management apps used for offices are more complex than that are used for personal life. Apps store data at different places, fewer apps belong from hard drive and fewer that store data in the cloud, organizations have to select apps from them. These apps are future trends of organizations and developers are working to make it more user friendly and easier to operate As per an analysis under taken of 50 apps, thes apps differ from features, calendaring, time management, data storage to meditation (Bhattacharjee, 2017). Apps are also designed to make customers take rest in between their tasks and feel more attentive while at work. One of the apps, Sapience Buddy has become very popular in countries like US, Europe as it stores personal data efficiently and then analyze it to be used to increase efficiency of employees. As per CEO of Timely app, the companies are focusing on larger companies now, it started with smaller companies and now has targeted large companies and is developing apps to increase efficiency of employees working in a team of big organization. Brands like Bureberry and Starbucks are performing extremely well by offering great apps to their customers, their apps help to to fulfill the individual choice of a customer, allowing them to view products of their choice. They are sent to target specific messages and information which is useful for customers (WN News, 2017). Role of apps in providing ease to people Burberry provides the experience of being at a store in its apps. The customers have the choice to see color, design and have first hand experience through online apps. The Starbucks Mobile app is also very popular, it allows users to choose from their best beverages rather than to stand in queue. Even hotels provide an experience of providing innovative dishes to the customer through online apps. Apps like Panda help customers to choose from their best hotels and place their order.Digital acceptance among people and an effective leadership are equally important (Messinger, 2016). Digital transformation in processes occurs when a separate digital department work for another thousand people contacting through social networking. This is accomplished when excellent leadership takes interest in it and when the core focus of the company is on digitization (Brynjolfsson Mitchell, 2017) Considerations for the leadership It is suggested that for leaders and managers too have to follow one or more steps as needed for digital strategy of an organization. Like Uber and Airbnb, it is essential to restructure the policies as per the present industry. Also, like in US post office, the managers need to creatively design the product as per latest trends of digitalization. In digital transformation, the sub markets can also exist together. The managers can also redesign the path to the customers as done by lemonade.com. The companies are separated from customers with a middle organization and making sure the present distribution channels are not disturbed. Next, the value proposition is changes like rideshare insurance launched GEICO farmers provides standard personal automobiles including insurance coverage (Huckstep, 2016) There are certain suggestions for leaders and Managers. The components of the good digital strategy are to firstly design the core requirements when a digital strategy has to be prepared . Core assets of the company have to be analyzed fully to make the digital strategy successful. Like there are companies who consider sales and professional employees as their assets. Online companies make advertisements and paper ads through various sites, people are motivated to use these services. The online advertisement company captures millions of people over the Internet. Apple has many online customers. The next component is to prepare a core mission statement for the company. Digital slogan which will motivate all employees to move towards digitization. This is very essential for digital changing transformation. Example, a company could have a digital strategy to operate as best retail store globally. The company has a mission to launch the best online store and sell all products globally. The mission statement should be clear and achievable. The mission should not contradict with companys own value. The next component is defining the results what the company wants to do an d allot a leadership role to a person. CEO of Tesco did this when they first aspired to be an online brand and go for digital strategy. Companies like Starbucks and Bureberry also play an important role in making people inclined towards digitization. All its brands are available online and customers are free to pick their choice. Being digitalization vision should pass from leaders to all employees. Leaders should create value proposition and deliver to it all structure of the organization. Lastly is effective governance, where employees are requested to take pending project to their home so that they dont end in making similar apps made by different vendors. There should be a management among different teams related to work, tasks, time, communication which will inspired by a leader (Harsh, 2017). Hence good control of employees will bring more accuracy, uniformity and it will prevent tasks to be done repeatedly. All these components are very important for digital strategy to be su ccessful. Role of Leaders in streamling the future of using apps In order to be successful in the coming times, leaders should work more systematically. Presently, majority of the data that is needed to mark, understand and accept by the staff is not gathered in a systematic manner. The irony in this age and time is thatin spite of availability of surplus data online, decision makers generally lack timely and correct information at the right time. For instance: Although many customer service organizations are using digital technologies such as American government uses it to collect data or Bureau of Labor Statistics uses it to collect Population survey. The reason they are unable to collect accurate data is that they dont ask pertinent questions (Boudreau, 2016). Researchers and Economists usually makes an attempt to manage this by doing their own surveys but they too fall short of credibility, scale and scope. The administrative data of the Government such as tax forms also make available a worthy source of data, but this is required to be combi ned with government survey data to escalate its credibility. Alterations in the traditional structures Now a days organizations are required to be transparent towards its investors and needs to be more flexible as far as balanced and relationship based projects are concerned. Instead of primitive structures of organizations , a flat system of hierarchy will be preferred . The leadership model too has to be shared and combined. Work is all technology oriented and all the work can be done at any time using the available devices. The globe is networking with unlimited partnerships and the jobs are redesigning itself to be more just and learning oriented. There is a breakthrough innovation in technology and devices using fast technology are having huge impact on the work of the people . The jobs are now all the more fair , transparent and as per the ease of the employees (RSS, 2015). Because of these transformations in technology there are transformations in business . The businesses and employees are harmonizing the alterations by engaging the automation services as per the new changes. The automation services are reducing the work of the employees . Example of these automation services are big data , and algorithms. All the work initially undertaken by the workforce are now replicated by the said services. The businesses and leaders have to redefine their work for improved optimization instead of causing obstruction in the work. These changing drifts are crucial for the leaders to undertand , what is the technological structure of their business at present and how much depedent it is going to be more in the future. They need to understand the way of working , tactics that has to be followed to move with the changing times (Glass, 2017). Role of HR With the rise of usage of technologically driven companies the attitude of employees towards their is bound to get effected. The employees have to now all the more be ready to work together in small and big teams to complete their assignmemnts. The primary role of HR is to incorporate rules and regulations of the company in its mobile as per the profile of the employees. It is the HR who has the responsibility to decide the way the apps will be used by the employees. When more and more collaborations will be formed amongst the team members it would mean secure mobile application management. In order to ensure security the firms needs to have strong , policies and rules as per the features of the app. Though mobile apps are well versed with flexibility options but HR would have an additional role in monitoring the employees jobs by sending regular updates and alerts. The availability of safe and dependebale information will help in improving the usage of these apps by more users. (Bou dreau, 2016). All this will result in great technology breakthrough and would bring out more productivity from the employees and that can fulfill their own entrepreneurial roles. The Human resource department would also act as an change agent. (Bhattacharjee, 2017). The examples of several companies are already there whose HR departments is playing a great role in encashing the app technology. These are Twitter and Uber which make use of lower take apps by sending quesries to the employees about the extent of work completed by them. This would make the employees more productive as they have to always make sure that their work is completed on time before the query gets rised at the end of the day. The best time management system works well when it is incorporated in the day (Daniel, 2013). Although technology is growing at a much faster speed but management structures are are changing at a very slow speed. There has to be more involvement from the HR department side as new employment models are coming up like projects, gigs and contracts. There are more innovative forms of employment that are cropping up like the freelancers, contractors, recruitment system in organization. This has made the basic recruitment communication also very much dependable on the social media. Conclusion The report points out that in future the progessioanl and personal lives of employees can be better managed with the help of apps. This would result in several considerations from all the three perspectives , one from employyes side, one from the leadership side and from the Human Resource Department side. The report studies several examples and cases where the use of apps have changes the life of the employyes , example by using the mobile order apps of several restaurants the consumers can order their products without being in the long lines. The leaders have to play a very essential role in the process of digitalization in their organization as a clear vison only can support the changing technological strategy of the business. The role of Human resource department is also discusued which would ensure that the app gets incorporated all the essential rules and regulations for the employyes to ensure that the work gets done timely . They also have a major role to play that of a chang e agent to incorporate digitalization in the business. References Bhattacharjee, A. (2017, May 02). Austria essays

Austria essays The reason I choose this topic is because I might have some Austrian in my family. I thought that it would be cool to figure out some things about this country and also check if they are bad or good. In this article, they talk about a lot of things and how they think that the U.S looks at them like Barbarians and other interesting facts. The Atlantic Journal the Atlantic constitution; Atlantic, Ga.; Feb 13, 2000; Bert Roughton Jr.; Haider, 50, leads the populist right Freedom Party, which in recent days was installed as a coalition partner in Austria's new Government. This has caused a lot of drama in the country of Austria. A lot of people are raging around in Vienna. The police are dressed up in Riot gear because of the raging on the streets. Gargle says "It's crazy, he sits around with a beer in one hand and a Cuban cigar in the other. Two thirds of the people didn't even vote for him. What is an average Austrian to do?" The formation of this coalition caused outrage across Europe, where the freedom party is viewed as something between neo-Nazis and conventional U.S Republican conversations. While all this stuff was stirring in Vienna, on Thursday European rabbis said they would move a planned meeting from Vienna. One of the men in charge Joerg Haider is unacceptable to the European family of nations. Aba Dunner, secretary general of the conference of European Rabbis, told a Slovakian newspaper. The thoughts of the Holocaust, Hitler and SS and concentration camps are not acceptable at the start of a new century and never can be, since we know exactly what they led to in the 30's and 40's. In Switzerland, where the right-wing People's party captured 22.5 percent of the vote in the last election, European governments that opposed Haider were condemned as meddling. One poll showed half the Swiss opposed the action by the EU members. However the government goes at all this, Haider's su ...

Push and Pull Factors of migrating from Mexico to the U.S essays

Push and Pull Factors of migrating from Mexico to the U.S essays There are many different push and pull factors that push migrants away from Mexico and pull them into the United States, especially California. A major factor that encourages migrants to go ahead and move is the proximity. California is across the border which makes it that much easier to get and transporting your belongings doesnt become that much of an issue when its that close of a change. A major push factor from Mexico is the poverty. The population below the poverty line is forty percent, a dangerously high number. When that many people are in poverty, it creates a problem for the government in terms of how to deal with that many homeless people and how to insure their well-being; in Mexico no such promises can be made. Along with the poverty, that affects children, there is also unemployment. The unemployment rate is 3.3% along with the underemployment rate of about twenty-five percent. A pull factor from the United States is that minimum wage is required. Another thing is that people are needed for jobs that most Americans wouldnt consider; such as garbage men, gardeners, and other similar jobs. In Mexico there is political instability. The government keeps changing laws and regulations which make the Mexican lifestyle a lot harder and more difficult to cope with. The United States is politically stable which draws suffering Mexicans to it. In the United States there is freedom of speech and one can express ones self in many different ways unlike Mexico. A push factor away from Mexico is the many environmental issues it has. A very important one is that natural fresh water resources are extremely scarce and the ones that are actually present in the north are polluted. There are raw sewage and industrial effluents polluting rivers in urban areas. There is also deforestation, widespread erosion, desertification, deteriorating agricultural lands, very serious air and water pollution in the natio...

There were resources and main targets for instant drilling on record (Exterra Resource Limited, 2011). In addition, diamond drilling outcome for the three ventures was reliable with past drilling and with various catches having observable gold. Simultaneously, offer from Firestone Energy was not countersigned. The issuers were moved by the fact that, the company had joint business enterprises with international black cost-effective empowerment mining and Power Company with more than eight firms in the Waterberg coalfield, where it intended to enlarge a coal mining scheme. They needed to exploit investor’s significance by supplying and increasing possible mineral plans. They also wanted a rapid investigation plan to develop the Waterberg source. Signaling Mechanism that Issuer’s used There are so many indicators that the issuers in the two companies have used. Such like, how the offer would affect the company and its net asset per share the effects that the issue will ha ve to the monetary status of the business. The productivity and -trade and industry risks, foreign exchange rate variations, risk of the offer to the company and the capital obligation, as well. Furthermore, they have considered the environmental threats, discovering of economic resources and the extent of success of the ventures (Firestone Energy, 2010). They also raised concern on access to land and their access to additional capital. The issuers should utilize these signals to allow the prospects and then public at large to evaluate the situations and be able to make independent decisions. These will always guide on how trustworthy the offer is and how much beneficial it will be to the

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the doctor assuming the role of God Essay

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the doctor assuming the role of God - Essay Example â€Å"A new species would bless me as their creator and source: many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs.† (Shelley, 58) Therefore, it is evident that there is an insatiable urge in Victor Frankenstein to assume the role of God and he is often criticized for crossing ethical and moral boundaries with the aim of achieving this goal. An understanding of his experiences with the monster in the novel confirms that his choice is executed with ill-intentions and questionable for ethical motives. This paper makes a reflective exploration of the idea that Victor was wrong in assuming the role of God. Assuming the role of God for the purpose of creating life is wrong, and such an endeavor led to the detriment of Dr. Frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. A profound analysis of the theme of assuming the role of God in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein confirms tha t the major character, Dr. Frankenstein, has been highly obsessed the lure of creating life from his early childhood onwards. At his young age, Victor was fascinated by the wonders life offered him and he wanted to learn about all of them and he dedicated his time to exploring the realms of these wonders through the study of alchemy, chemistry, philosophy and human anatomy. As a youngster, Victor was obsessed with the power of knowledge and wished to find out the secrets of nature and its powers. â€Å"The most learned philosopher knew little more. He had partially unveiled the face of Nature, but her immortal lineaments were still a wonder and a mystery†¦ I had gazed upon the fortifications and impediments that seemed to keep human beings from entering the citadel of nature, and rashly and ignorantly I had repined.† (47) Significantly, his obsession for knowledge led Victor to make a life-altering decision – the decision to create an animate being. After several years of labor – intensive work – stitching together different pieces of flesh into one being – Victor finally completed his task and created life. The outcome, however, was not the wonderful being he had hoped for, but rather a monstrous atrocity. He had created a fearsome and inhuman creature; he created a monster. Thus, Harold Bloom presents â€Å"Victor Frankenstein, in his act of creation, as being momentarily a moral idiot, like so many who have done his work after him†¦ When the ‘dull yellow eye’ of his creature opens, this creator falls from the autonomy of a supreme artificer to the terror of a child of earth†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Bloom, 6) Therefore, it is fundamental to maintain that Victor’s attempt to assume the role of God by creating a monster resulted in his ultimate detriment and tragedy in life. One of the essential factors about the character of Victor in the novel is that he is presented as a counterfeit of God and as a Fau stian figure, rather than a Promethean one. Significantly, the intention of the protagonist in assuming the role of God in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has not been one of serving the welfare of humanity, but rather to serve his egoistic motive of acquiring power and respect of his creation. In fact, the most fundamental irony of the novel Frankenstein: Or,

1800s Era of Good Feelings Essay Example for Free

1800s Era of Good Feelings Essay Although many seemingly happy events such as the â€Å"Era of Good Feelings† and the granting of universal white manhood suffrage occurred during the early 1800s, the statement that nationalism and not the fear of sectionalism caused westward expansion is an invalid statement. Westward expansion was truly an effect of a growing sectionalism in the country originating from events such as the Tariff of 1828 , the National Bank, and the Missouri Compromise. Preceding the Missouri Compromise was the Tallmadge amendment. When the Tallmadge amendment was passed, the South was infuriated. The amendment decreed that the slave state of Missouri had to gradually free all of their slaves and prohibited any more slaves to be brought into Missouri before they could be admitted into the Union. See more: Homelessness as a social problem Essay This made slave-owning Southerners upset because they viewed the amendment as a threat to sectional equality and balance. With the South suspicious of the North trying to ban slavery and the North suspicious of the South trying to expand slavery, both sides naturally flocked to the West in order to gain another slave or free state to tip the balance of power in their direction. Even in the Florida Purchase Treaty of 1819, after war hero Andrew Jackson exceeded his orders from the White House and tore through Florida, motives for acquiring new land seemed to continually hint towards the growing sectionalism and concern about the issue of slavery. Also, the uneasy Missouri Compromise gave both North and South even more reason to expand westward. The Missouri Compromise established Missouri as a unrestricted slave state which gave abolitionists and Northerners great concern about the spread of slavery while the establishment of the Missouri Compromise line that prohibited slavery above it caused Southerners to worry about slavery too. All the suspicions and fears of the two sections resulted in a fast and furious expansionism in the west. Then, during the presidency of John Quincy Adams, his nationalistic policies of roads and canals laid a heavy financial burden upon the federal government requiring the continuation of the tariff which caused tension among the South. The National Bank, although established by the nationalist Alexander Hamilton, played a big role in sectionalism in the United States. When the Bank of the United States irresponsibly overspeculated in the West, the financial crisis of 1819 arose in which many western banks were shut down and had to foreclose mortgages on numerous farms in the West. The foreclosure of farms in the West made the National Bank extremely unpopular in the West and fueled western sectionalism, pushing western farmers to lean towards the slave-owning Southerners in the battle for influence in the West. In addition to these events, the Tariff of 1828 made Southerners angry yet again and widened the rift between the North and South even more. The extremely high tariff was not for revenue but rather for the purpose of protecting American manufacturing. This made the Southerners upset because it showed partiality to the northern factories and hurt the southern farmers who were large consumers of manufactured goods. The hated tariff would then prompt South Carolina to take action and bring out the old Kentucky and Virginia resolutions to nullify the tariff. Thus, these two events added to the worries of both sides and to the westward expansion fever.

Gene Therapy for Cancer Essay -- Research Papers

Cancer occurrs by the production of multiple mutations in a single cell that causes it to proliferate out of control. Cancer cells often different from their normal neighbors by a host of specific phenotypic changes, such as rapid division rate, invasion of new cellular territories, high metabolic rate, and altered shape. Some of those mutations may be transmitted from the parents through the germ line. Others arise de novo in the somatic cell lineage of a particular cell. Cancer-promoting mutations can be identified in a variety of ways. They can be cloned and studied to learn how they can be controlled. Several methods such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy have been used to treat cancers. The cancer patients who are not helped by these therapies may be treated by gene therapy. Gene therapy is the insertion of a functional gene into the cells of a patient to correct an inborn error of metabolism, to alter or repair an acquired genetic abnormality, and to provide a new function to a cell. Two basic types of gene therapy have been applied to humans, germinal and somatic (1). Germinal gene therapy, which introduces transgenic cells into the germ line as well as into the somatic cell population, not only achieve a cure for the individual treated, but some gametes could also carry the corrected genotype. Somatic gene therapy focuses only on the body, or soma, attempting to effect a reversal of the disease phenotype by treating some somatic tissues in the affected individual. One of the most promising approaches to emerge from the improved understanding of cancer at the molecular level is the possibility of using gene therapy to selectively target and destroy tumor cells, for example, the loss of tumor suppressor genes ... ...rine Interleukin-4 Displays Potent Anti-tumor Activity In Vivo. The Great Gatsby Essay

What are personal desires? How do we make the decision to decide between our desires and choosing to conform? When making a decision between desires and conforming it is a difficult choice that we all face in our lives. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzerald it demonstrates the difficult conflict between what we want and conforming. When we have personal desires it can be difficult to conform. The first way in which Fitzgerald shows the idea of the choice between our desires and conforming is through The Valley of the Ashes. The Valley of the Ashes is a place created by the dumping of industrial ashes where people of a lower class live and work these people who live there have a desire to live â€Å"The American Dream†. The people in the valley have to chose to either pursue their dream or to conform to the lifestyle. It is a difficult choice to decide to pursue the desire to live a different life style so many choose to conform to the lifestyle that they are livin g in. The second way in which Fitzgerald shows the idea of the choice between our desires and conforming is through the green light. The green light is at the end of Daisy Buchanan's dock and it represents Gatsby's love for her. Gatsby has a desire to be with Daisy. Gatsby has the choice between his love for Daisy and conforming to the social norms and accepting that Daisy is now married. The choice between love and conforming to what society sees as right is a difficult choice for Gatsby. When we have personal desires it can be difficult to conform. This idea is present in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald through the symbols of The Valley of the Ashes and the green light at the end of the Buchanan's dock.

Marisa Leathers Kathleen McCoy Development of the Exceptional Child April 16, 2017 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Discovered in 1973, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders were recognized from a specific pattern of cardiac, craniofacial, and limb defects between unrelated infants. The one thing the infants all had in common was that they were all born to alcoholic mothers (Bradshaw). Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, also referred to as FASD for short, can lead to numerous physical and mental defects and disorders alike. These defects and disorders range from mild to severe, depending on the case. The reason the alcohol effects the fetus like it does, the symptoms to detect it early on, and the types of intervention to help those living with†¦show more content†¦This is when the alcohol begins to damage the liver and the other organs, as well. Alcohol can disrupt the developmental process at any point during the pregnancy and there is no safe amount of it that can, or should, be consumed during the pregnancy, at all. This even includes the time before a woman knows that she is expecting a chi ld. Of course, expectant mothers who binge drink and pregnant women who drink heavily on a regular basis put the fetus at the most risk for a FASD. What is a FASD? Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that occur when an individual is prenatally exposed to alcohol (FASD). The effects can alter the person’s physical, mental, learning, and behavioral health. The effects tend to vary from child to child, but defects and disorders caused by FASD are irreversible (Mayo Clinic). Because there are so many different types of FASD, there are many different symptoms to indicate a problem. Then, doctors and specialists have to try and decipher what type of FASD it is, how serious it is, and how to ease its effects on the child in order for the child to live as normal of a life as possible. What are the symptoms of a FASD? It can be a very difficult task to diagnose a FASD, especially if the mother involved does not have accurate information about her alcohol usage.
